What is Little-Coder?
Little-Coder is a coding agent harness optimized for smaller language models, built on top of the minimal agent substrate pi. It is designed to bridge the gap between small local models and complex coding tasks by providing a scaffold that maximizes model performance. The project emerged from research into scaffold–model fit, demonstrating that a 9.7B Qwen model could outperform frontier entries on the Aider Polyglot benchmark when paired with the right scaffolding.
Little-Coder extends pi with 20 extensions, 30 skill markdown files, and a Python benchmark harness. It does not fork pi but uses it as a dependency, keeping all customizations under the pi/extensions/, skills/, and benchmarks/ directories. The launcher runs pi with --no-extensions and wires in exactly the bundled set, allowing users to add or remove extensions by simply dropping or deleting directories. This modular design makes it easy to customize the agent's capabilities.
Key features include four built-in tools (read, write, edit, bash) and a ~1000-token system prompt, which keeps the agent lightweight and efficient. The agent loop, multi-provider API, TUI, session tree, compaction, and extension model are all inherited from pi, ensuring a robust foundation. Little-Coder is ideal for developers who want to run coding agents locally on modest hardware, leveraging small models for tasks like code generation, debugging, and refactoring.
Use cases include personal coding assistants, automated code review, and educational tools where privacy and low latency are important. Technical details: requires Node.js 22.19+ and can be installed via one-line command using npm or bun. The launcher is a Node.js script, so Node must be on the PATH.
